Clean energy is the buzz words of many industries today. Be it to conserve te environment or to get out from under oil producers ever growing thumb. Matthias Thoma of Hopscotch Technologies was asked about the viability of current replacements for the combustion engine. He stated the following: " Generally it is a good thing to move away from burning fossil fuels. However after massive lobbying governments around the world essentially focussed their support efforts on battery driven electrical vehicles. While this certainly is a plausible solution on a small scale, it is literally impossible to manufacture the batteries necessary to produce 60 million new vehicles every year." Matt Thoma continued: " Realistically it would mean replacing the stronghold of the oil producing nations with that of the main producers of rare earths. Even today the production cost of batteries for mobile devices are rising, as the rare earths required are in ever more severe short supply. And at this stage we are talking of batteries that weigh in at 50 or 100 grams. Now imagine we would produce 60 million car batteries at 250 to 300 kg each." Further more Matt Thoma said: " Governments are now almost exclusively providing government aide for battery driven vehicles, given the car manufactures every reason to drop research for other alternatives. Hopscotch Technologies favors subsidies for magnetic propulsion as well as driving further advances in the efficiency of combustion engines, like for example the wave disk generator which only uses a fraction of the fossil fuel a regular combustion engine uses today." In closing Matthias Thoma remarked that besides the supply challenges battery engines still face other hurdles. " Generally everyone worries about being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a depleted battery or having to wait 10 hours for a full charge. It is unrealistic to expect consumers to jump on this transportation concept under these circumstances. experiments with replaceable car batteries are promising, as they reload the car within minutes, much like getting gas at the station, however there are warranty issues. Is the next battery I get older than the one I had. What if that battery is in bad shape , will it affect the sales price of my car? It would be better to consider a wider range of alternatives instead of putting all the eggs in one basket, just like we did with the combustion engine.
