New York Independent Filmmaker to Debut
“Horatio’s Odyssey” at Producers Theatre in Mid-Manhattan
Robertson Tirado’s distinctive film combines the drama of
human desperation with the thrill of extraterrestrial powers
New York, NY, September 14, 2009 — Continuing his stride into the formidable footsteps of many independent auteurs who came before him, New York filmmaker Robertson Tirado has completed his first feature, “Horatio’s Odyssey,” which will have a week-long run at The Producers Theatre from Oct. 5, 2009-Oct. 11, 2009 in Manhattan before receiving nationwide release on DVD.
“Horatio’s Odyssey,” produced, written and directed by the 37-year-year-old Tirado, is a riveting drama about a destitute, itinerant one-time banker whose encounter with an extraterrestrial gives him the ability to find his estranged family and to exact revenge on the corrupt associates whose deeds caused his homelessness in the first place.
With captivating special effects that include spaceships over New York City and the use of superhero powers, an exuberant cast of international newcomers, an exciting backdrop from the rooftops, alleyways and thoroughfares of Manhattan, a stirring electronic soundtrack, and an absorbing storyline, “Horatio’s Odyssey” is a good candidate to become one of those select independent films that help build careers.
“I was interested in creating a new kind of superhero, one who never intended to become one and never had the means to make it happen,” says Tirado, a self-taught filmmaker who hails from Ridgewood, Queens, and who’s earlier effort was a independent short called “Bill & Gaby,” which was a semi-finalist at the Brooklyn-based Reel Time Film Festival.
“When we first meet Horatio in upstate New York, he is without a job, without a family, and without hope. But his chance meeting with someone from another world eventually helps rectify that situation in a very emotional and rewarding way,” adds Tirado, who developed the story, wrote the script, found the cast and completely oversaw the special effects. “I guess in some ways many of us always look to someone or something from another world for a little boost in life. That’s what makes this film very appealing to me. In addition to that, it’s just good old-fashioned entertainment.”
“Horatio’s Odyssey” builds a tense and exciting atmosphere not unlike that of many other independent features from newcomers who use inventive shooting, deep character emotion and other tools of the trade to tell their intriguing stories. These include award-winning efforts such as the recent film “Primer,” by former software engineer Shane Carruth. “Primer,” a drama about two young scientists who create a potentially lucrative time-bending device, won the Grand Jury Award and the Alfred P. Sloan Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and the Best Writer & Director Aw
