According to Matt Phillips from The Wall Street Journal, Ebay.com and Amazon.com may see a huge sales and e-commerce boost this Holiday Shopping Season, as they are offering the best, discount deals on the web right now. "Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is commenting positively on trends for e-commerce that should be favorable for eBay and Amazon.com. “With the majority of the 2010 holiday online shopping season in the books, eCommerce sales growth has accelerated meaningfully over growth in 2009,” Munster writes. Here’s why:
We believe the secular shift of retail sales online from offline will continue to be strong through the holiday season, driven by convenience, selection and low cost. Beyond these consistent underlying themes, we see the following as incremental growth drivers for the 2010 holiday season: (a) higher-end consumers. The majority of online shopping is done by higher-income consumers, which have seen their incomes and wealth bounce back more quickly than lower-end consumers, (b) proliferation of mobile devices, which enable easy comparison shopping and shopping on-the-go, (c) rise of group buying (Groupon, LivingSocial, etc.) and flash sale (Gilt Groupe, Ideeli, RueLaLa) sites, and (d) increasing availability of free shipping from the major retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.
Since it became pretty clear that the holiday sales season would be solid, shares of Amazon.com and eBay have seen a nice run. Since the end of August, Amazon.com is up 48% and eBay is up 28%, versus the 19% gain in the S&P 500. But those stocks have seem their outperformance slip. This month Amazon is up 2%, eBay is down about 2%. The S&P 500 is up about 5%.
