Houston tree specialist says winter is best time to plan landscaping projects

He said the lumbers needed for landscaping projects are cheaper during winter months than at other times making the cold season the best time to plan projects and purchase the needed materials.

“Winter is a great time to start planning landscaping projects especially the planning and purchasing phases. Many people think that landscaping projects shut down during the winter but in reality, that is the ideal time to begin the process,” he said this week in Houston, Texas.

He said most homeowners begin thinking of building decks in the spring. “Because of the weather, spring is ideal for building things like decks but if you want to save money, it is best to do your planning and purchasing before spring. Everybody is waiting for spring to start buying the materials but by then, the prices have gone up,” Flory added.

The Texas tree specialist said because of less humidity in winter, pressure treated woods stabilize and dry more evenly than during other weather conditions.

“This is great for outdoor decks. Consider decks built in the summer. When drying in the sun, pressure treated woods will expand and contract sometimes resulting in cracking, warping and damage to the wood,” he added.

Winter also gives you more time to plan your projects properly because most people typically do less during the cold season.

“This can result in better planning and better quality projects because there are fewer distractions. Also the money you might save by buying your lumber in the winter you can add to other projects,” he said.
