Air polishing is able to help provide a safe, efficient and contemporary approach to achieving a variety of treatment goals when use appropriately. So air polisher was introduced to dental community after the dental ultrasonic scaler .
As we all know, dental air polisher is an important dental equipment of gingivitis preventing and controlling, which can be seen everywhere in a dental clinic.
How it works?
Air polishing system uses air and water pressure to deliver a controlled stream of specially processed sodium bicarbonate in slurry through the handpiece nozzle. Especially designed as the minimize splash-back type, the dental air polisher has its 360 degree rotation effectively cleans even hidden tartar. The working head of the polisher can be easily sterilized by submerging it in boiling water. At the same time, the high efficiency jet of sand power and pressurized air insures even polishing while reducing kinetic energy loss. It is easy to operate, clean up and maintenance.
Air polishing should not be confused with air abrasion. Air abrasion uses greater air pressure and more abrasive particles. It is intended for procedures such as removing decayed enamel and roughening enamel surfaces prior to bonding.2,3 Aluminum oxide is the standard abrasive powder for use in air abrasion. The Mohs Hardness Index ranges from 1-10; aluminum oxide has a Mohs hardness number of 9, which is four to five times more abrasive than air polishing agents.
Commonly used first is an ultrasonic instrument which uses tickling vibrations to knock larger pieces of tartar loose. It also sprays acooling mist of water from the ultrasonic scaler tip while it works to wash away debris and keep the area at a proper temperature. The device typically emits a humming or high pitched whistling sound. This may seem louder than it actually is because the sound may get amplified inside your head, just like when you put an electric toothbrush into your mouth.
