FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 19, 2010 --
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for drug and alcohol testing are changing effective May 1, 2010, due to changes implemented by SAHMSA. The new changes are noted below, but you can read a full description of the new changes here.
Drugs to Screen For Initial Cut-Off Concentration Confirmation Cut-Off Concentration
Heroin – new drug 10 ng/mL 10 ng/mL
MDMA (Ecstasy) – new drug 500 ng/mL 250 ng/mL
Amphetamines 500 ng/mL 250 ng/mL
Cocaine 150 ng/mL 100 ng/mL
THC (Marijuana) 50 ng/mL 15 ng/mL
Opiates (Codeine/Morphine) 2000 ng/mL 2000 ng/mL
Phencyclidine (PCP) 25 ng/mL 25 ng/mL
The method of testing (urine lab based) remains the same, as does the acceptable forms of alcohol detection (breath or saliva) and the alcohol concentration cut-off (0.02).
So how does this affect non-DOT mandated companies?
Laboratories across North America, under the direction of SAHMSA have altered cut-off levels for intial screening and confirmation to line up with the new industry standards. This includes all occupational testing cut-offs, not just DOT tests. This move is a mandatory requirement of laboratories to be in complicance with their quality control checks. Labs do not have the option to offer the old cut-off levels to existing non-DOT clients.
Because the drug concentration cut-offs have been altered, the majority of company drug and alcohol policies will dictate the old-cut off levels despite the fact that these cut-offs are no longer in use. This may cause serious concerns if the results of a positive drug test are disputed - especially if the cut-off concentration would be considered a negative using the company's drug and alcohol policy rather than the labratorty cut-off concentration.
SureHire is encouraging all companies to be pro-active in implementing drug and alcohol policy changes to reflect the new laboratory standards. Lack of policy compliance and poor quality drug and alcohol policies are the main reason that Canadian companies lose greivances or court cases related to drug and alcohol testing.
Ensure that your company has a sound drug and alcohol policy and ensure that you follow it in every situation.
