My opinion about the characteristics of a good resume is based upon many years experience reviewing hundreds of thousands that have been sent to our firm. What resumes are, and why they exist, has not changed much in the last 10+ years. The way resumes are delivered has changed, but their purpose has remained consistent. A resume is simply a tool. Its goal is to generate sufficient interest on the part of the person receiving it that they will want to learn more about you. In other words, it is an advertisement or a promotional document, one that creates interest from the “potential buyer.” The product is you!
When you send a resume to someone you are asking them to do something – to consider your qualifications. It is imperative that you project the “very best you” when you do this. The time and effort spent making certain your resume leaves the appropriate message is well-spent; it is an investment in your future.
There are lots of people and organizations available to help write resumes. There are books and online articles. Yet with all these resources, the eventual success of your resume depends upon the work you put into it. Regardless who writes your resume, it must include appropriate, meaningful information that excites the person who receives it. Only you can provide this information. Others may help you format it, and finalize the document, but in the final analysis, it is the information that is important.
How do you create the ideal resume? There are certain “resume laws” as well as strategies that I believe are essential to make your resume effective. My next blog will address specific ideas that will help you write a resume that invites the reader to “learn more about me.” Expect to see it in a few days.
