How EmtJets Private Charters Helped Stranded Airline Passengers During the Recent Volcano Eruption

July 15, 2010

When Iceland's volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted in April 2010, disrupting commercial air travel in Europe for days, stranding tens of thousands passengers from all over the world, many found a way aro

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 15, 2010 -- Air traffic was banned over many European countries -- especially the United Kingdom -- because of concerns the volcano's ash cloud could damage jet airliners, possibly causing them to crash if the volcanic ash entered their engines.

Yet some European countries allowed planes to fly under the clouds in what are called "visual flight rules." Most large jetliners need to fly at very high altitudes in order to fly their most efficiently; flying at lower altitudes would have meant they would have had to use more fuel and may not have been able to make it across the Atlantic without refueling.

But with a vast fleet of over 4,000 aircraft at their disposal, EmtJets could provide smaller jet planes, planes that do best flying at altitudes lower than those flown by commercial airliners, thus allowing them to "fly under" the volcanic ash. Thus, EmtJets were able to accommodate some of the stranded passengers.

For those countries where commercial and private jets were banned completely, EmtJets still had the answer, with helicopters that were able to ferry passengers throughout Europe because a helicopter's rotor blades are unaffected by volcanic ash. Propeller planes also were able to take passengers where the smaller jet engine planes could not.

In such a trying time for the aviation industry, EmtJets was a shining light amidst the volcano ash, mobilising its fleet to ensure the desperate needs of stranded passengers was met wherever possible. For many, this was the first time they had considered using the services of a private charter company, but having seen the immense flexibility it provides over the commercial aviation industry, many will undoubtedly turn to EmtJets again.
