How is Aging Different Now Than 50 Years Ago?
Aging is a mystery for most of us. We go about our business trying to survive the rigors of society, not realizing that time is passing us by and we are all aging. The things we once did, we may not be able to do with the same energy, but we try.
One hundred years ago people died at the average age of 47 years. Today we are living longer lives, well into our 80s and beyond. If you were born in the 1970s you have a 10% chance of living to be a hundred today. The over 85 years of age group is the fastest growing cohort of people today. Eighty million of us are reaching the age of 65 years all too quickly. A thousand people an hour are turning 65 and someone turns fifty every seven seconds!
You may ask, how do I navigate the aging process successfully? It is not easy. Today many people are too encumbered and trying to survive financially, struggling with family pressures and parents who need help. They neglect taking care of themselves and end up aging prematurely:
What’s the answer? As a person who has dealt with these vicissitudes of life and self-change as well as self-doubt, Clinical Gerontologist Dr. Eric Shapira is firmly convinced that keeping one’s inner-child alive and nurtured is important; staying social is another; eating right and exercising is another; stimulating your mind goes without saying and being intimate is another aspect
Dr. Shapira counsels individuals and families who are in need of a caring ear, providing information regarding such topics as the death and dying part of life; writing a legacy; dealing with important documents; what to do with respect to taxes and probate; the grieving process; sex and intimacy issues like dating again after the death of a spouse; how to choose an ideal partner; maintaining intimacy with a compromised spouse; senior dating issues, just to name a few.
Dr. Shapira’s new book A New Wrinkle: What I Learned from Older People Who Never Acted Their Age is a guidebook for both parents and children who need to know about the aging process and how to confront the issues of aging. Dr. Shapira teaches positive affirmation, acceptance and flexibility with respect to the aging process. This book’s mission is to help people stay mentally and physically healthy while living longer, more productive lives.
Dr. Eric Shapira is available for interviews.
