Procrastination is the art of putting off until tomorrow what you should be doing today. Procrastination is probably the most expensive habit that a person can develop because it costs you all the success that you could be enjoying if you were an action taker.
How do you know if procrastination is having a detrimental effect on your life? Here are a few clues to look for:
- If you are having similar problems to what you had last year then you are probably a procrastinator in that area of your life.
- If it has been ten years since you left school and you still need to go to work then you are probably a procrastinator in your wealth creation efforts.
- Look around you. If your home or work environment is untidy then you are definitely a procrastinator.
Procrastination is a thief and you simply can't afford to allow it to exist in your life. So here are a couple of tips to help you rid yourself of this evil for good.
One powerful strategy is to change your attitude towards procrastination.
Most procrastinators are sincere. When they tell themselves that they will do it later they actually believe it. However the evidence contradicts this belief. If you don't want to do it now then you are far less likely to want to do it down the track when it has become a bigger and uglier task.
Try this little trick. Whenever you are tempted to procrastinate something, say to yourself "either I do it now or I accept that I am never going to do it." If you approach this seriously you will be surprised at just how effective it is. No-one wants to reap the consequences of never doing an important task. So this little trick helps you take action on what is important and, as a result, your life will start to change for the better.
Most procrastinators are living in the results of their inaction. For example they may be in an untidy, messy environment. They continue to procrastinate the cleaning process, because the bigger it gets the scarier it gets. Finally the consequences of living in this mess may become scarier than the thoughts of cleaning up and so they have a massive spring clean. Then they start the whole cycle again.
