Choosing an orthodontist is a decision entailing some deliberation on your part. Whether for yourself or your child, orthodontic care provides important aesthetic and functional results. As such, you should choose an orthodontist who is committed to achieving the best results for you.
Beginning Your Orthodontist Search
The first step in choosing an orthodontist is finding practices in your area. When beginning your search, consider the following:
• Visit the websites of the orthodontists, if they have one. Websites may include biographical information about the orthodontist, including where he or she has received orthodontics training and experience. Websites also often include information about the practice and the services offered.
• Ask your general dentist for a referral. Asking someone you trust for a referral is a good way to start your search. You should also ask friends and acquaintances for recommendations.
• Once you have narrowed down your selection to a few orthodontists, schedule consultations with these orthodontists. During a consultation, you can get to know the orthodontist and the practice better. Plan some questions to ask ahead of time, focusing on aspects of your care you have prioritized as being most important to you.
Some of the orthodontists you choose to meet may offer free or reduced-cost consultations, which will allow you to meet the orthodontist without feeling obligated to choose him or her.
Choosing an Orthodontist
During the consultation with the orthodontists, be aware of the following:
• Your orthodontist should willingly answer all of your questions. In most cases, patients have a long-term relationship with their orthodontist – children may be seeing this professional for many years. It is important for you to feel comfortable asking questions about your treatment options.
• At a minimum, your orthodontist should have completed dental school. Beyond that minimum qualification, you must decide whether you want an orthodontist who received specialized orthodontic training. You must also decide how many years of experience you would like your orthodontist to have.
• Ask the orthodontist about your teeth and possible treatments. You may want to choose an orthodontist who expresses an interest in finding a treatment personalized to your needs. The orthodontist should suggest your best treatment option and explain why it may be the best solution for you. You should also ask if there are any alternatives you should consider.
After meeting multiple orthodontists, you should have a good idea of who to choose based on services, practice atmosphere, orthodontist experience, as well as other factors important to you. In some cases, people choose the first orthodontist they meet. It may be the case that the first orthodontist meets all of the criteria you are looking for.
