How to Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon

February 7, 2012

Most cities now have multiple plastic surgeons. How do you choose the one that’s right for you?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 7, 2012 -- Baltimore, MD, February 7, 2012 — When considering plastic surgery—whether for breast augmentation, facelift, liposuction, or rhinoplasty—you should do your homework. Research the procedure you want, talk to friends who’ve had work done, and most importantly, consult with plastic surgeons.

Before you schedule a consultation, however, check the surgeon’s credentials. Qualifications matter. The surgeon should not only be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, but also have an active membership in such higher-level associations as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies confirm that the surgeon has the proper education, experience, and ongoing training.

During your consultation with a Baltimore plastic surgeon, get to know the surgeon. Bring a list of questions from your research. View before and after photos, looking for results that please you. Read any available testimonials and ask for patient referrals. Ask how frequently the surgeon performs the procedure you are interested in. Remember, experience counts.

A good surgeon will listen to your goals, answer questions to your satisfaction, and then examine your body frame, proportions, skin, and medical history to develop a strategy you both can agree on. The consultation should be about what you want, not what the surgeon wants.

Finally, do not skimp on safety. Does the doctor operate in a hospital or in a private, accredited facility? AAAHC and AAAASF accredit surgery facilities to assure the highest standards of safety. Ask questions and meet the staff. Make sure that everyone, from the surgeons and anesthesiologists to the registered nurses and aestheticians, are properly licensed and duly experienced.

Ultimately, selecting a plastic surgeon in Maryland is a personal decision. Even if a surgeon is fully qualified and experienced with a procedure, you need to feel completely comfortable with and confident in that person. If you don’t feel comfortable the surgeon, he or she might just not be the right fit for you. You enter into a unique partnership with a surgeon when you schedule a procedure. Find someone with whom you can communicate openly, someone who listens actively to you, someone you can trust.

Selecting a plastic surgeon is your most important decision toward achieving your goals. Find one who has a great safety record, strong credentials, a solid reputation and with whom you feel.
