The complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor, or CMOS, is a more modern version of nonvolatile BIOS, which stores the default configuration of information that the operating system communicates with. http://www.mypopmkt.com/laptop-battery/ Often it is protected by a default password and must be disabled or entered before you can change hardware settings on your laptop. Normally, you can override or guess the password to disable the CMOS (see Tips), but if you set it on your Dell Latitude D510 and forgot it, you will need to manually disable it.
InstructionsThings You'll Need:
Phillips screwdriver, 3/8 inch
Step 1Unplug your laptop, separating the power supply from the computer.

Step 2Remove the battery from your laptop by pressing both depression locks and sliding it toward you. The key is to remove all sources of power so that the CMOS will forget the password it has stored.
Step 3Flip your computer upside down and locate the maintenance panel. This is located approximately where the touchpad is, just on the reverse side of the laptop.
Step 4With the screwdriver, remove both screws from the maintenance panel, setting them where you will not lose them.

Step 5Press the release slide to open the maintenance panel, placing it carefully out of the way.
Step 6Look inside the opened maintenance area to locate the EEPROM chip. This is the CMOS as it connects to the laptop.
Step 7Gently remove the EEPROM chip and wait approximately 60 seconds after it is separated from the laptop. This will allow any built-up charge to run out.
