How to grow your coffee shop, retail or leisure business in 2010, without breaking the bank.
Leading retail and leisure designer Cliff Birchall shares some low cost ideas to keep you ahead of the competition in 2010.
After a tough year for retail and leisure industries in 2009, there is new hope for 2010. Although we shouldn’t get carried away with the talk of green shoots and a good trading period for retailers over the Christmas period 2009 - 2010, these positive messages do start to infiltrate peoples levels of confidence, which can only be a good thing.
I think we are all pretty realistic however, that if we do get growth in 2010, it will be steady.
So how can you best equip yourself for a successful 2010. Well the message is clear, whether consumer confidence grows a little or not, the way to succeed this year is to gain market share. This means you need to be distinctly better than your competition. As well as being better than your competition, you need to find a way of communicating this to them.
Let me explain further. If you run a small coffee shop, and there are other coffee shops in your local area, you need to help customers choose you over the others. This may mean you have to do a few things. Once you have decided how you will be better (faster, taste nicer, greater choice, more comfortable) you can start to support this message with some low cost activity:
Give your coffee shop a lick of paint - this will make sure you are cleaner and fresher than the others in your area
Introduce some new simple signage or prints. This will make sure you are up to date with the latest colours and styles.
Introduce some new coffees. Maybe run a new coffee every month on special offer, so people continue to come and see what’s on offer.
Create a new kids areas, where children are welcome. This could simply be some small tables and chairs from Ikea and a few simple (easy clean) toys. Maybe you paint the wall a vivid complimentary colour too.
Consider your music, in relation to your customers. Who frequents the coffee shop in the week, make the music relevant, you can change it again at weekends.
Loyalty cards - cost very little, but can help to keep people coming to you.
Build a fast lane for people who are working and want take aways quick.
Buy some new cushions from Ikea (£2.50 each in all primary colours) - make your place feel ‘uber comfortable’
None of the above will cost you much money, just some time. Whether you run a shop, bar, amusement arcade or other leisure attraction keeping it fresh and innovative for your customers will keep them coming time and time again throughout 2010.
