Halloween costumes are very popular this season. Such costumes range from the classic costumes of ghosts and witches to the more innovated ones that take its inspiration from cartoon characters and superheroes. One superhero popular in costume parties is Batman. More often than not, one is likely to spot a guy or two dressed in a Batman costume with its black cape and belt. If you wish to sport a Batman costume for Halloween but are worried about the budget, why not make your own costume? All you need is the superhero’s signature cape and belt and you’re off to kick your Halloween off, Batman style. The steps are just simple and easy to follow.
To make the cape, take a rectangular-shaped black felt, 27”x 45” in size. Have the longer sides be top and bottom while the shorter sides be the left and right sides. Get a bowl and position it half into the center top of the felt. Place it in an upside down manner then using a chalk, draw a circle following the shape of the bowl. Cut out the circular area. This will serve as the cape’s neck. Next, draw a straight line that runs from the neck’s edge towards the right bottom edge. Do the same on the left side. Cut along the lines you’ve made. Make a 12” mark from the outer edge of both sides and an 8”mark from the bottom. Arch the felt to connect the marks and cut away the extra portion.
Get the bowl and position it halfway from the bottom edge. Draw a half circle following the sides of the bowl. Repeat this step, moving the bowl to the edge of the last mark you make. Cut a rectangle, 16”x3” in size using the black felt cut outs. Determine the cape’s center top and the strip’s center. Fold the strip in half placing it over the neck and glue it in place using hot glue. Glue on Velcro on the extension on the neck. Make sure the circle won’t be too tight around the neck. With a print off of the bat symbol from your computer, trace this pattern on the yellow-colored foam sheet and glue it on the cape’s back.
To make the belt, cut strips from the same foam sheet you used for the symbol, 2 ½” in size. Cut an oval piece measuring 8”x 4”, each from both the yellow and the black foam sheet. Have the two ends of the strips in the oval’s center and glue them into place. Cut an oval center from the black oval using a border that is ½” to ¼” thick. Glue it over the right side of the yellow oval.
Take another print off of the bat symbol, one that fits the size of the black oval border. Make this your pattern in cutting the black foam into the shape of the bat symbol. Glue it to the oval, positioning it inside the black border. Cut out a slit on one end of the belt and a mushroom-shaped tab on the other.
