Balloons make fun decorations for birthday parties, family gatherings and holidays. Homemade inflatable balloons add a special meaning to those events along with providing a craft activity that is fun and easy to complete. Make inflatable balloons to entertain children on a rainy afternoon. Mylar wrapping paper and epoxy glue for plastics are the two main supplies needed to make the balloons. Mylar wrapping paper is available at hobby and craft stores and many chain store locations.
■1Roll out a sheet of Mylar wrapping paper on a flat, smooth work surface. Turn a paper plate upside down and place it approximately 3 inches from the edge. Trace around the paper plate. Repeat the process one more time.
■2Draw a 1 1/2-by-2-inch rectangle on one side of each circle. The position of the rectangle does not matter. The rectangles will make the blow spout for the inflatable balloon.
■3Cut around the outside edge of each balloon and rectangle. Make sure not to cut into the top edge of the rectangle connected to the circle. Remember, the rectangle creates the blow spout to inflate the balloon.
■4Position one circle so the rectangle is at the bottom. Squeeze a line of epoxy glue for plastic approximately 1/4 inch from the outside edge of the Mylar shape starting at the bottom left-hand side of the rectangle. Squeeze the line of glue along the left edge of the rectangle, around the circle and down the right-hand side of the rectangle.
■5Line up the second Mylar balloon shape over the top of the glued shape. Carefully place the top shape on the bottom shape lining up the edges. Press the edges together. Allow the glue to dry 30 minutes.
■6Blow up the inflatable balloon and tie with a piece of curly ribbon.
