Health experts suggest avoiding the use of insect repellents available in the market as they contain strong chemicals that risk human health, of course no of us would like to endanger health just to make the bugs go away.

Soapy water is the simplest but very effective homemade insect repellent. It is very easy to prepare, mix some soap with water and stir it. Pour the mixture in spray bottle and spray on ants directly. To get rid of ants in your garden you can spray soapy water in garden area of your house. However, avoid too much spray on foliage as it may harm some plantation.

To keep your plants free of pests you can use another homemade insect repellent. Take three tablespoons of liquid dishwashing soap and mix it with three cups of cooking oil. Add the mixture to a quart of plain water. Pour it in some kind of spray bottles after that your homemade insect repellent is ready to spray in your garden area.

Keep grapefruit, orange or lemon rinds in water for some multiple days to prepare a very effective homemade insect repellent. Spray to make your garden pest free.

If you are looking for a homemade insect repellent that helps to kill the fleas, take soapy water in some shallow wide pan. Just over the soapy water light a lamp or electric bulb. Fleas would be attracted towards the lamp or bulb and will fell into the soapy water, because of soapy cleanser it would not possible for fleas to jump out. Lavender oil, cedar oil and other herbal oils when applied around ears and neck of pets, helps getting rid of fleas.

Take chopped garlic and mix into an insecticide. Keep soak chopped garlic in plain water for almost 48 hours, Add a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid after straining. Now add water make it dilute. Spray in garden area to keep mosquito away. Other homemade insect repellent to keep you safe from mosquito are, catnip oil, crushed basil leaves and feverfew herb when applied on exposed body area keep mosquitoes away. Dettol when mixed with baby oil at a ratio of 1:4 acts as very effective homemade insect repellent against mosquitoes.

In a cup of water when added a tablespoon of vanilla extract gives another homemade insect repellent against mosquitoes. You can apply it on exposed parts of your body like hands, legs, ears, neck. It can help keeping mosquitoes away when place in an open container. The smell of the homemade insect repellent will keep away flies, gnats and mosquitoes from you. Even alcohol keeps away mosquitoes and other small insects when applied on exposed parts of the body hence act as homemade insect repellent.
