Well there are many methods out there available to the person looking to have their carpets professionally cleaned. As a matter of fact in can be mind boggling figuring out which method to choose. Let's take a common sense look at the most common methods and see which one stacks up.
Hot Water Extraction or "so called steam cleaning" - First of all let's begin with the name itself. Has anyone ever seen or heard of anyone, ever getting their carpets cleaned by steam. The simple answer is no and to add to that it isn't possible. Steam would melt or damage the carpet fiber and carpet backing so this just isn't possible. The term steam cleaning is simply a marketing ploy used by some to make you think your carpet will be cleaner and healthier based on "steam" being applied to your carpet. The sad truth is that it is simple hot water, NO steam. Like previously stated, it isn't possible to clean carpet with steam. What is really happening is that your carpet is being pressure washed with hot water and a vacuum attachment is trying to suck up the dirty water. That is it! Nothing more. The problem is that if you try to power wash your carpet, the force (or psi) of the water that is being shot into your carpet will wet the backing, padding and sometimes the sub-floor under the pad. This moisture can become a breeding ground for mold, mildew and bacteria. So while Hot Water Extraction "steam cleaning" can clean dirt from the carpet, the risks just may be to much.
Rotary Bonnet - This method utilizes a 175 rpm buffer with an absorbant cotton pad. The cleaning solution is sprayed on via a pump up sprayer and then the buffer is run across the carpet. The cotton pad absorbs the cleaning solution and the dirt from the carpet. With this method you don't have to worry about the mold, mildew and bacteria as with the previous method. The biggest problem with this method is that the buffer travels in one direction thus only cleaning in one direction. This leaves about half of the carpet fiber in its original condition, dirty! Also the head weight of the machine really isn't enough to get down to the bottom of the carpet fiber. This is a safe way to clean half of your carpet.
OP or Oscillating Pad Machine cleaning - This method uses a machine that resembles a 175 rpm machine but in appearance only. The oscillating machine not only rotates but as it rotates it oscillates as well. This ensures that every square inch of the carpet fiber gets cleaned. The head weight of the oscillating machine is much greater than the 175 rotary which ensures a deeper clean down to the bottom. This process is also similar where the cleaning solution is sprayed on prior to cleaning with a pump up sprayer then the machine is run across the carpet. This method is will also leave the carpet drier immediately after cleaning and is normally completely dry in 2 hours.
So if your goal is to get the cleanest carpet you can, without damaging your carpet and not causing any possible health risks due to mold and mildew then the OP (oscillating pad) process is your best choice.
