How to Replace the CD Burner in an HP Presario Laptop

The Compaq Presario is a solidly performing desktop computer that is packed with features from the factory. Along with the updated software and operating systems that tend to come with new Presarios, many PCs are now coming with internal CD burners. The CD burners allow users to burn (i.e., save) information to CDs so they can transport or backup their files from PC to PC. Sometimes, you will want to upgrade or replace the CD burner in your Presario for some reason, and thus could save alot of money on labor charges if you simply installed it yourself. Replacing the CD burner in a Compaq Presario desktop computer is not hardm and can be performed in a matter of minutes.



Instructions

Unplug all of the accessories from the ports of the Presario and set the computer alone on a flat surface. Reach on either side of the computer's case and press the plastic tabs holding the case on the computer body. Slide the case off the body.

Locate the back of the current CD burner and unplug the large wiring strip from the rear port. If your CD burner also plays music (and most do), you will need to unplug the small sound-card wire as well. Use the screwdriver to remove the mounting screws along the sides of the drive.

Slide the CD burner ouf of the front of the computer and replace with the new one. Install the mounting screws and rehook the wiring harnesses just as they were on the old burner drive. Slide the computer cover back on and then reattach the computer's accessories via the labeled ports on the back of the machine.

Turn on the computer and allow the operating system to recognize the newly installed hardware. At this point, if specific drivers are needed, you can download them from the Internet or pull them off the CD that came with the CD burner

Tips & Warnings
Ground yourself and all of your tools before working inside of the computer. This will prevent static electricity from destroying information.
