Ex-Veteranian spills secrets about the Pet/Dog industry, secrets the public isn't suppose to know.
As a dog owner there is nothing I like more than my dog, I enjoy his companionship more than anything. But I must say, excessive dog digging can really put a strain on our relationship. As much as I like him I just can't have him digging holes into our wood floors.
How To Stop Dogs From Digging
What we must understand as dog owners is that your dog doesn't dig to spite you, we do not know the exact reason for his digging, it may be something as simple as he smells something under the wood floor, or something like he has an itch and the digging helps comfort it. You need to clearly communicate to your beloved dog that the digging is unacceptable, no matter the reason he is digging, you must make it crystal clear that is in unacceptable. That is the true way to stop your dog from digging. The secret is to NEVER let your dog dig next to you, as soon as he starts you make him stop, do whatever it takes, after a few times, your smart dog will understand what is going on.
Why Do Dogs Dig Holes?
That is an important question, because to stop your dog from digging you need to determine why he is digging, here are a few popular reasons as to why dogs dig:
He simply enjoys the digging process!.
Many times your dog is only seeking attention, if you aren't around a lot, or don't give him attention when you are, then this may very well be the issue.
This goes with the one above, your dog may be bored and restless so he is just doing whatever he can to stimulate his body and mind.
When/if your dog is digging under a fence, it may be that he is looking for a mate.
Take note that dogs are VERY attracted to fertilized dirt, it may be irrestible to him if he is tempted by the smell, remember they smell 120 000 times stronger than us humans.
Some say dogs dig in order to establish a shelter to cool themselves down or warm themselves up, but this wouldn't be the case if your dog spends most of his time inside.
Some breeds (terriers, labradors) are very prone to digging, it is instinctual and bred into them and will be hard to get out of them, but maintain control and you'll be able to.
Some dogs dig a quick hole for food storage purposes, for example if they find a bone or something in the garden they will instantly dig to create a place for it.
How To Stop Your Dog From Digging
Consistency is KEY. As I mentioned earlier, the only way to really get rid of the dog digging problem is to never let him do it.
If he does it sometimes and you don't mention anything because you are busy watching TV, this will only tell your dog to keep going.
You must make it clear every single time you catch him digging that it is unacceptable behavior.
Another trick is to really give your dog some good exercise, try and burn off his energy in a positive way instead of having him do it alone by digging.
Do not let your dog roam around the house alone if he still has a digging problem, because he'll take that time to practice his digging and it will be much harder to get it out of him. If you aren't around to spy on him and tell him when to stop, make sure he is confined, until the digging problem is fixed.
Another old fashion trick is to fill up air balloons and put them in the area where he likes to dig, once he goes digging and the balloon blows up, the sound will scare him away. In some cases the negative association is more than enough to stop the digging.
There are a few other ways to get control over your dogs digging but we are done here.
