How to Treat a Disc Bulge With Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Disc bulges in the lower spine can cause excruciating pain. Before resorting to surgery, consider non-surgical spinal decompression

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Francisco, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) May 17, 2011 -- Lower back pain from a bulging disc is one of the most painful things a person can experience. It can be incapacitating and result in a lower quality of life, as many of life's pleasures require the use of a strong and nimble back.

A lumbar disc is a strong, thick ligament that holds two adjacent vertebrae (spinal bones) together and serves as a shock absorber, thanks to an inner jelly-like material that can distribute weight efficiently. However, if the outer layer of the disc weakens from old injuries or repetitive trauma as in jumping, a single event like bending forward while lifting something heavy can cause the center material to punch through the outer layers, injuring the disc and potentially pressing against nerve tissue.

The symptoms of a bulging disc include lower back pain, back muscle spasms, radiating pain down the buttock or leg, and in some cases weakness and numbness in the affected leg.

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a form of treatment offered at some chiropractic clinics where a special table is used to distract, or gently pull apart the disc in a pumping action, in set cycles. The patient is secured to the table, which has a section that separates, and a special motor slowly pulls the spine axially; holds it for a few seconds, then releases. This pumping action can cause the bulge to return to the center of the disc by creating a temporary vacuum. The action also increases blood and lymph flow to the injured disc, speeding up its rate of healing.

San Francisco Chiropractic and Wellness has been offering spinal decompression for over five years. The treatments are priced lower than most centers, which is important to patients since it is not covered by insurance.
