Take this self-test and see how you do! This is an example of some of the more simpler things that we teach guitarists at http://rnbacademy.com , a site devoted to total understanding and applied music theory to the guitar in order to create a self-sufficient player.
Notes in Parenthesis, indicates the Academy Module in which this skill is primarily covered. Take note of how long it takes you to come up with the answer. After each question we list the time it takes the Average Academy student to answer the same question. Applied theory needs to happen in the moment, the guitarist can't leave the gig to find the answer. He needs it at a moments notice, for it to be truly useful.
1. What note is on the 5th string 8th Fret? (Taught in: Notes on the Neck)
**Academy average = 1 second
2. What is the Enharmonic for Db? (Taught in: Notes on the Neck)
**Academy average = 1 second or less.
3. Can you play the answer to Question 2 on every string of the guitar? (Taught in: Notes)
**Academy average = 12 seconds
4. Can you play from the 3nd string starting on A along three strings only (E, B and G strings), till you reach the 3rd string 2nd fret in the key of A Minor? (Taught in: Lead Guitar Phase 1)
**Academy Average = 15 seconds
5. Can you write the notes in an F Major Scale? (Taught in: Major Scales)
**Academy Average = 6 seconds
6. Can you state what 3 notes comprise a G# Diminished triad without using the guitar to do so? (Taught in: Triads and Chords)
**Academy Average = 3 seconds
7. Can you state what the iii Chord of the Key of Eb is? (Taught in: Major Keys)
**Academy Average = 2 seconds
8. What is a ii vi V iii I in B Major? (Taught: in Major Keys and Composition)
**Academy Average = 5 seconds
9. What two notes are missing from a Pentatonic Major Scale compared with a Major Scale
(Taught in: Lead Guitar Phase 2)
**Academy Average = 2 seconds
10. What notes are in a B Minor 11, without looking at the guitar? (Taught in: Lead Guitar Phase 2)
**Academy Average = 6 seconds
