However, the dynamic and changed scenario that exists today has put an additional responsibility of being the facilitator as well on the consultants’ shoulder. While implementation still rests with the client organisation, the expectation from consultants these days is to do it together with the client, making it happen. Gone are the days when consultant’s role ended with the submission of a report.

Human Resource Consulting in my opinion is still in a nascent stage in India. People assume human resource consultants to be mainly recruitment consultants. The perception that has been formed is also because 90% of the so-called human resource consultants are actually recruitment consultants. Recruitment too is an integral part of human resource consulting where understanding the client organisation, its needs, the profiles and then matching the profiles are important activities. However, mostly dissatisfied clients have to deal with irrelevant CVs and consultants with a very shallow knowledge of the client organisation and its needs.

Human Resource Consulting is about addressing the right needs of the client organisation. Right needs would mean real needs and not as expressed by a client representative alone. It is important to understand the needs by spending some time in the client organisation before embarking on the human resource consulting assignment.

Also, it is important to look at and human resource consulting assignment as an integrated approach towards satisfying client’s needs. A client may express a need in human resource area but the solution to the same may lie in an integrated approach between its operations, marketing, finance and human resource. Therefore, it is important to take human resource consulting as a strategic function with a view to provide permanent and long lasting solutions rather than quick-fix and isolated solutions.
