In a dynamic situation such as todays, it is futile to look at isolated solutions. This means that what apparently may look like a financial problem, may actually turn out to be marketing or a human resource problem. It is thus very important to look at the whole management process scenario. Similarly, when one works in the human resources domain, it is absolutely important to have an integrated approach and look at a comprehensive solution to problems and look at the whole human resource management process as such and not of its sub-systems alone.
For example, what may look like a team working issues, could have its genesis in compensation & benefits system of the organisation or the different competence levels of people. I remember at a client’s place not long ago, there was an issue of tea working described to us. When we delved deeper into it, we realised the issue is of newer people getting almost 50% more salaries at the same levels due to which the older employees were not cooperating with the new team members. The new members were paid more as they were found more competent in the skills desired by the company. In order to address this issue, we had to map and assess their competencies, work towards bridging those gaps, doing a compensation & benefits study to make salary corrections and finally come down to team working training workshop which was largely successful. If we had only done a training program on team working, there would have hardly been any benefits.
Any human resource management process must revolve around a system that encompasses its all other systems. We have found competency mapping & assessment a system around which all other systems can be built. For example, once the competencies are mapped, recruitments, appraisals, Training Needs Identification, Performance Management System etc can all be linked to the same bringing uniformity in all its systems and a focused approach in the HR department of the organisation. Ultimately the most important KRA of any HR professional is talent development which is basically development of its competencies.
