FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 13, 2012 --

The Huron Valley Martin Luther King Jr. Day Committee is gearing up to host what it expects to be one of its most exciting and inspiring celebrations of the MLK Day holiday in recent years. 2012’s March on Main Street will start at Prospect Hill Shopping center (Milford Kroger parking lot) and end at Central Park. Line-up for the event starts at 12:15 with music and refreshments, and the march itself commences at 1:00. This year’s march includes keynote speaker Herbert Sanders, Legal Director of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and a music performance by The Fetching Rubies, a student acappella group. The committee is also excited to once again offer a large-scale community drum circle at the conclusion of the march provided by Drummunity director Lori Fithian.

Prior to the March on Main Street, the committee will award the winners of the annual art/essay/speech competition. As in previous years, winners and selected submissions will be on display in the storefront windows of several downtown businesses during the week prior to the march. The theme of this year’s artist competition is “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope,” which is the quote engraved on the side of the new Dr. King Memorial in Washington D.C.

Participants in the march are encouraged to head to downtown Milford for lunch and to view the competition submissions before going to Prospect Hill for line-up.

The Huron Valley MLK Day Committee is a group of volunteers dedicated to honoring the MLK Day holiday by promoting community service opportunities. Each spring, the committee hosts a Community Volunteer Fair designed to showcase a myriad of volunteer opportunities for citizens looking for a way to make a difference. The committee also sponsors community service projects during the summer months. Last year, the committee facilitated two community service projects: painting the Central Park Pavilion and surrounding play area, and painting the Center Street Park Gazebo.

The committee is also pleased to announce another MLK Day-related event being offered at Milford United Methodist Church on the Sunday evening before the holiday (See information below).

All events offered by the HVMLK Day Committee are free and open to the public. For more information on Huron Valley’s MLK Day activities, visit the committee’s website www.HVMLKDay.org or contact Isaac Perry at 248-685-7254.

America’s Sunday Supper at Milford UMC

On Sunday, January 15, 2012, all are invited to participate in a community-by-community, nationwide conversation about our most pressing social issues in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is an opportunity for individuals to reach out to new persons and build community over a shared meal. Inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., America's Sunday Supper invites people from all backgrounds to come together to share a meal, discuss issues and highlight the power each person has to make a difference!
Milford’s Sunday Supper will be from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. and will begin with a light meal prepared and served by BRIDGE, our youth group (free-will donations will be accepted). Our program will include a short video called “The Jasmine Story,” a presentation/discussion with the Rev. Paul Perez, deacon at Newburg UMC and worker for JFON (Justice For Our Neighbors) and a musical performance by The Perfect Fifth, a local young men’s a cappella group.

Please plan on attending this community event which will kick-off the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration in Milford and invite your friends and neighbors to attend. If you would like to help with this event, please contact the Rev. Sherry Foster, deacon at 248-684-2798 or 248-318-5613.
