The U.S. Drug Agency (FDA) warned consumers to stop using the product Hydroxycut after 23 cases of serious liver damage, including death of a young man 19 years in 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 28, 2010 -- The U.S. Drug Agency (FDA) warned consumers to stop using the product Hydroxycut after 23 cases of serious liver damage, including death of a young man 19 years in 2007, have been reported. Symptoms range from jaundice to damage requiring a liver transplant. People were healthy and their symptoms started after taking the products. The reported cases may represent only the tip of the iceberg. The Canadian manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, has recalled 14 products.

Available in grocery stores, pharmacies and the Internet, this range of weight loss supplements, sold under the brand Iovate MuscleTech and is supposed to be fat-burning and diuretic. It is advertised as containing natural products. At least 9 million products were sold in the United States last year.

Dietary supplements are not regulated by the U.S. government as are drugs. Manufacturers are not required to prove they are safe and effective before selling them. But they must give the reports of health problems on their products after sale. In 2004, the government has banned ephedra or ephedrine, ingredients found in several supplements (called appetite suppressants) that have been linked to heart attacks and cerebral-vascular accidents.

The FDA has not identified the ingredients of Hydroxycut causing health problems. Ano Lobb, public health researcher who has studied Hydroxycut and other supplements to the magazine Consumer Reports, believes that the problem may be the hydroxycitric acid derivative of a tropical fruit (Garcinia cambogia) that has already been linked to liver problems. Lobb warns against the fact that several other products for weight loss containing hydroxycitric acid remain in the market.

"It should really be careful with supplements, especially the pills for weight loss," said Lobb. "People believe that the FDA has determined that these products are less safe and effective, but it is really not the case.

For its part, Health Canada has received 17 reports of adverse reactions to Hydroxycut products in Canada. Adverse reactions associated with the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological. No liver damage was reported.
