Beleaguered Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has again found himself in hot water after propositioning his Australian counterpart at last week’s meeting of European and Asian heads of state in Brussels.

According to the Italian Internet News site, Il Cretino, the 74-year-old Italian leader’s aides were embarrassed by Berlusconi’s behaviour throughout the two-day meeting during which he sat opposite Gillard unbuttoning his shirt, raising his eye brows, winking, and blowing kisses.

Others at the meeting have said that Gillard did not seem to notice her Italian counterpart’s advances, possibly because she could only see the top of the 170cm leader’s head protruding above the negotiating table.

“It was not until Senor Berlusconi sat on a couple of telephone books that his antics came to the attention of every one else in the room,” said the report in Il Cretino.

Gillard still failed to notice the notoriously flirtatious Italian leader even after he started coughing loudly, banging on the table with his shoe, putting on funny hats, and lighting a pipe before producing a ukulele and singing Italian love songs.

Asked by Vote Smart's Rome correspondent about the veracity of the Il Cretino story Berlusconi admitted that he had become infatuated with “numero 59" but denied that he had done anything to embarrass himself or Italy.

Vote Smart can reveal the numerical reference to Prime Minister Gillard refers to her ranking as the 59th Hottest Head of State, at a sexy politician internet ranking site, frequented by Mr Berlusconi, who ranks 93. Italian officials denied Mr Berlusconi is obsessed with the website rankings but did not deny the issuing of a restraining order by Doris Leuthard, President of Swizerland (# 31), and a diplomatic incident with Laura Chinchilla, President of Costa Rica (# 37) who was in receipt of packages allegedly sent by Mr Berlusconi containing used pairs of his underwear.

Mr Berluscone further denied being found dressed as a maid outside Ms Gillard's hotel room, being detained while attempting to climb a tree outside her window, and ordering Italian intelligence officers to install hidden cameras throughout her suite.

But Berlusconi also promised to continue wooing Gillard and said that a union between the two leaders could presage a new era in Italian-Australian relations.

He also said that if given the chance he would “take Miss Julia to paradise” and raised the prospect of offering her the presidency of the province of Lombardy if she responded positively to his “heartfelt overtures”.

The current President of Lombardy, Roberto Formigoni, has been absent for the past twelve months after travelling to Ottawa in an attempt to woo the Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean (#1), and was not available for comment.
Berlusconi is reported to have told friends that he was not dissuaded by the fact that Gillard was in a relationship with long-term partner Tim Mathieson.

“I noticed that she is currently with a very bland gentleman named Tom. I offered this Tam fellow one million Euros to compete for her affections, like in the film, but he turned me down. Why not? The Italian taxpayer can afford it!"

Italy’s taxpayer, Mario Bertolotto of Palermo, said that while he bore no personal animosity towards the Australian leader and had no less than 73 cousins in Sydney and Melbourne, he was uncomfortable with Berlusconi’s use of state money to pursue romantic escapades.

However Berlusconi’s antics also appear to have offended others at the Brussels meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel (#121) suffering bruises after being pushed to the ground by the Italian leader in his attempt to take the seat opposite Gillard.

According to sources within the German Foreign Ministry, Berlusconi had attempted on several occasions to switch nameplates before simply running at Merkel and shoving her into a fondue trolley.

Berlusconi has not denied the allegations that he assaulted the German Chancellor, telling Italians in his monthly hot tub address that he had done what any “red blooded Italian male” would have done and “pushed aside Brunhilda to get to Venus.”

The news comes just days after the only Italian language media outlet not owned by the Italian leader, The Vatican Bugle, reported that Berlusconi had been overheard reciting a tasteless joke about victims of the Holocaust.

In a rare departure from its policy of not commenting on Italian domestic politics and in language usually only reserved to attack gays and women, The Bugle’s Chief Editor, Archbishop Carlo Vespa, said that the Italian leader’s joke was “tasteless, offensive, moronic, and further evidence that Senor Berlusconi is suffering from syphilitic dementia.”
