Stan Straub, co-owner of www.bestassistedlivingaids.com has a cochlear implant and created a new Facebook page called "I Love my Cochlear Implant". He did a search on Facebook for a cochlear implant page, but he didn't find one. So, he created one. The idea of the page is to have a place where people who already have a cochlear implant and those that don't can share their information and ask questions. He wanted a page where anyone wanting to know more about a cochlear implant, or to hear about the latest hearing technology news, could have a place to go to. It's a page that will hopefully bring the hard of hearing and hearing worlds together.
Another reason for creating the page is because of the increasing number of hard of hearing people. A new study from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers reveals that nearly a fifth of all Americans, 12 years or older, have hearing loss so severe that it may make communication difficult. The researchers also found that women and blacks are significantly less likely to have hearing loss. The new findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are believed to be the first nationally representative estimate of hearing loss and an indication that hearing loss affects more people in America than was previously estimated.
Stan feels that with the increasing number of hard of hearing people, there will be more and more people getting cochlear implants. And, he feels that it will be beneficial to have a page that will address any concerns or questions that those new people might have. He says the page is for all brands of cochlear implants, hearing aids, and all other hearing devices. He also emphasizes that no marketing will be allowed. He'd like to invite everyone to visit the page, click the "like" button, and find out about cochlear implants and ask questions.
