(Maple Lake)—Poor ice conditions have forced cancellation of one of Minnesota’s more popular ice fishing contests. Maple Lake’s Ice Fishing Tournament is being cancelled for the weekend of February 4th. Derby spokesman, Greg Thomes (THOMAS) announced the unanimous decision saying that the 13 inches of ice just isn’t safe enough for the type of contest that their organization holds.
This is only the second time in 37 years that the contest has been cancelled.

Contest organizer, Nick Olsen says that other weekend events will continue as planned in Maple Lake. The Arctic Plunge and Derby pre-party, silent auction will still be held.
The past 4 years the Maple Lake Ice Fishing Tournament has drawn 10,000 people to the town and getting the word out is going to be a chore for the committee.
Maple Lake’s contest is unique in that organizers allow participants to use fish houses and to take vehicles onto the ice. Olsen said that a car went through Maple Lake’s ice just as a decision was made to cancel the contest. I think we got our sign from God!
