Identity Theft, Anyone can be a Victim -News for Kelowna and Vancouver

(Free-Press-Release.com) August 20, 2009 -- Identity theft has been the No. 1 scam in Greater Vancouver this year, according to the Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C.

The BBB released its Top 10 list at a Vancouver police media briefing on Monday.

Bureau president Sheila Charneski said a study in the U.S. showed that more than 50 per cent of identity thieves were known to their victims.

"People who may come into your home, service people, friends of family members. When you think about it, over the period of a year there's a wide variety of people who come into your home.

"So the key there is to keep personal and private information tucked away."

Charneski also warns about unsolicited e-mails purportedly from a financial institution or a service provider.

She said the second biggest scam in B.C. involve overpayment schemes in which the thief pays too much, and advises the seller to deposit and refund the excess.

The financial institution then rejects the original deposit as counterfeit or stolen, with the scammer getting away with the merchandise and the victim's refund.

Charneski said other scams in the Top 10 include door-to-door scams, unscrupulous moving companies and shady used-car sales.
