Businesses and consumers continue to mismanage personal information from time to time despite many security laws such as HIPAA and GLBA. As such, the federal government recognizes the need to prevent identity theft assuming personal information of consumers will continue to be lost and stolen leading to increased cases of identity theft and related fraud. To protect consumers and businesses from the rising cost of identity fraud and extensive efforts required to clean up the aftermath of identity fraud, the federal government introduced the Red Flags Rule requiring high risk companies such as financial institutions and creditors to design and implement a clear strategy to prevent identity theft and reduce the number of actual fraud cases resulting from identity theft.

To support the efforts of the federal government and affected companies, Identity Management Institute (IMI) has introduced the Certified Red Flag Specialist (CRFS) identity theft certification program to train, assess and certify identity theft risk management professionals and ensure they have the required skills to administer and manage an identity theft prevention program which effectively identifies, detects and mitigates identity theft red flags or warning signs.

About Certified Red Flag Specialist (CRFS)

The Certified Red Flag Specialist (CRFS) designation is the first identity theft certification program which focuses on identity theft prevention and is fully aligned with the federal Red Flag Rules. The CRFS identity theft prevention certification and training program is divided into five areas including Red Flag regulation, program administration and management, risk assessments, and Red Flag management.

Future Identity Theft Predictions

Despite many existing security laws and business efforts to protect customer information, there is no doubt that the security of consumers’ personal information will continue to be compromised in the millions as we have become an identity obese society. This trend will lead to increased attempts of identity theft, especially in bad economic times. As such, the Red Flags Rule will be expanded in the future to affect more companies and address other areas of identity theft including employment identity theft, medical identity theft and fraud, and social security fraud which it does not currently address. As such, demand for the leading CRFS identity theft certification and training will increase to reduce billions of dollars in fraud costs and comply with the Red Flag rules.
