http://www.blogtalkradio.com/askheartbeat Statistics published by the U.S. Department of Justice indicate that a previous history of abuse is the key risk factor in murder/suicides. In one study, 82 percent of the men who killed their intimate partners were known to authorities — mental health professionals, the military or the criminal justice system. In most cases, the man exhibits possessive, obsessive and jealous behavior. The triggering event is often the woman's announcement that she is leaving him which increases the tension in the relationship and places the woman in danger.
Katherine van Wormer, MSSW, Ph.D., a Professor of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa Ph.D., is the author of the only book on murder suicides entitled Death by Domestic Violence: Preventing the Murders and Murder-Suicides (Social and Psychological Issues: Challenges and Solutions). This book provides valuable information on intimate partner and familial abuse that ultimately results in fatalities: both in the murder of victims and suicide of perpetrators. It provides a comprehensive overview of the literature and research on life threatening abuse, risk factors in abuse situations leading to fatalities, and the dynamics underlying murder-suicide domestic situations
Murder suicides are statistically perpetrated by males. The Washington, D.C.- based Violence Policy Center reports that in cases of murder-suicide, 95 percent are committed by men. Between 1991 and 1999, police were aware of previous domestic violence in 74% of homicides perpetrated by ex-husbands, 57% of homicides perpetrated by common-law husbands and 41% perpetrated by husbands in legal marriages.
Dr. Wormer's research led her to similar findings. "The U.S. National Crime Victimization Survey cites that 85% of domestic violence crimes are against women. Women are far more likely to be injured than men. Stalking and marital rape are largely male-on-female attacks. I stress these facts, as media headlines that have appeared over the past few years claim women are as violent as men. They may be as mean, but they are not as violent. Women rely more on verbal abuse and manipulation. The anti-feminist backlash is making some claims that are inconsistent with the facts " says Dr. von Wormer.
