A major wind storm howled across much of the nation's midsection on Tuesday and Wednesday, causing numerous flight delays and leaving extensive property damage and downed power lines in its wake. The National Weather Service reported that initial pressure readings for the storm indicate that the intensity of the mammoth weather event was similar to readings from the Blizzard of 1978, the March 1993 "Storm of the Century," and the November 1975 storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter.
The fast-moving storm blew in from the Pacific Northwest and crossed the Plains on Tuesday, causing blizzard conditions in sections of North Dakota. As it moved into the heartland, the addition of warm air fueled a series of severe thunderstorms and produced a number of tornado sightings and touchdowns. About 200,000 Commonwealth Edison customers were without power in the Chicago area, and countless airplane flight were delayed across the region. Wednesday's forecast called for continued high winds in many areas of the country as the massive storm finally began losing much of its force.
Drew Stevens, weather analyst for Top Ten Imports, noted that the initial storm of the season showed up a little ahead of schedule. "Many of the weather forecasters that we follow expected a big winter blast to hit in mid-November," Stevens said. "We were anticipating a huge storm to hit early but we didn't think it'd come before Halloween. We thought Thanksgiving seemed like a more reasonable target date," he joked.
Stevens reported that a stronger than average winter season is predicted for much of the nation's midsection, and he expects snowfall amounts to reach record levels in the Plains and parts of the Great Lakes region. "We've already seen blizzard conditions in Bismarck and other areas," Stevens reported. "In October. I can't remember a year when extreme weather made such an early appearance."
Top Ten Imports distributes the iHeater, which is a portable infrared heater that sells for only $279.00. This iHeater has been a popular choice on the home-heating market because of its unique ability to save consumers up to 50% on there home heating bill. Stevens said that the extreme weather conditions from last year's "Snowmageddon" winter storms directly affected iHeater's sales volume for December 2009 and January 2010. The company monitors available weather data to accurately access regions where product demand will be high throughout the winter season.
The unusual early season storm fascinated meteorologists because of its size and strong barometric pressure readings, which were similar to that of a Category 3 hurricane. A spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that the wind storm was within the top five in terms of low-pressure readings.
