Dr. Naseer Homoud Goodwill Ambassador and Director of Middle East office for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council while extending congratulations to the United Nations on organizing the Summit on MDGs said “we have high hopes on this Summit and we are certain that a new dimension to achieve the targets as laid down in MDGs would be ensured by world leaders attending the Summit”.
Leaders from around the world will meet in New York from Monday to Wednesday (20-22 September) for the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Summit. During the three day high level meeting that takes place at the UN Headquarters, they are to review progress, identify gaps and commit to a concrete action agenda to achieve MDGs by the agreed deadline, year 2015. A decade ago, at the Millennium Summit in September 2000, all member countries of the United Nations joined together in a 15-year effort to combat poverty, hunger and disease. They agreed that urgent action must be taken to save the lives of the mothers dying needlessly in childbirth, to get the millions of children missing out of education into school, to fight the spread of killer diseases and first and foremost to halve the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger across the world.
IIMSAM is calling on world leaders to work together with diverse actors, in new ways, to build on successes and finish the job they have started, arguing that if development commitments are not addressed poverty, hunger and conflict may further exacerbate global financial and economic instability. We must make greater efforts to mobilize the resources necessary to meet the Millennium Development Goals and this would be a wise investment for the future and if we fail it will only make our task in the future much more difficult and much more costly, asserted Dr. Homoud.
Speaking on dire need to accomplish MDGs Dr. Homoud said “The Millennium Declaration symbolizes the vital commitments ever committed to the marginalized people and they look world community with high aspirations for changing their lives. We have to ensure the smile and happiness on their face and if we fail, destiny shall never pardon us”. He further advocated for ‘unconditional support’ from all corners including governments and other stakeholders towards achieving MDGs as set by the United Nations.
Ten years ago, 189 world leaders met at the United Nations Millennium Summit and agreed to make dramatic global development gains by 2015. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were borne out of that meeting—eight concrete targets that focus international efforts on areas such as reducing poverty and hunger, improving health and education, and combating major diseases. Achieving targets of MDGs and issues affecting thereto are something no one country can achieve alone, these are global challenges, and need a global response and it is high time for governments to adjust focus on the poorest of the poor if they are to come close to meeting the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, asserted Dr. Homoud. He further urged participants of the Summit to conclude it with some vital and instrumental decisions and stressed that unless an urgent rescue package is developed to accelerate achieving all the Millennium Development Goals, and if wealthy countries do not act now to bolster international aid flows, the deadline of 2015 will be hard to meet and if we fail this would be an unexpected combined collapse.
The Millennium Development Goals Report-2010 issued from the good offices of Secretary General reveals that to achieve the target, more sincere and honest efforts are needed. In this context Dr. Homoud urged “Since MDGs are multifaceted in character and therefore necessitates concerted action by stakeholders from all levels. I take this opportunity to call on the governments and stakeholders for a comprehensive international partnership on the issues of global warming, eradication of poverty and hunger and for strengthening food production and food security policies”.
