While calling people all across the globe to realize the hazard which world is facing due to hunger crisis Dr. Homoud appealed for supporting the 1 Billion Hunger Project initiated by UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for involving common people to this mass movement of saving the world from hunger and its pros and cons. It is for the first time in human civilization history that the number of people ridden by hunger will exceed one billion by this year. It is the time for global citizens who have enough food to eat to take action to help feed the billion people on the planet who go to bed hungry each night, said Dr. Homoud.
With one billion people now living in chronic hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a global petition called "1billionhungry project" urging politicians to make international hunger reduction goals their priority. Beyond the goal of getting massive people awareness about chronic hunger, the main goal of the petition is to get 1 million signatures. These signatures will be presented to the representatives of each state attending the World Food Day at the UN headquarters in New York by the end of October 2010. This scope is to put pressure on the participating states to work together and assist FAO in its struggle against chronic hunger in the world. “It is indeed ironic to note that more than 1 billion people go to bed hungry every day, we the people of this world should believe that it is our privilege and responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate who are starving around the globe” said Dr. Homoud.
In the contemporary world where 1.02 billion people are hungry and almost 16,000 children losing their battles to live every day, nothing can be more serious issue than to deal with world hunger. The pace with which the human civilization is developing is somewhat contradicting its core and basic values- the right to feed is the most important right of every individual and the hunger ridden people are our fellow human being- and by this virtue they deserves to be fed under any adverse circumstances. Dr. Homoud urged people to sing this petition and join this movement from core of their hearts and to feel the pain, agony and suffering of our fellow human beings who are deprived of their basic right- that is food. He asked “doesn’t it sounds sarcastic when we talk of man reaching to Mars and at the same time several children are dying out of starvation. How can we console us amid such grim reality which unfortunately exists in a world of plenty? I don’t how to say but I have no words to explain my sorrow and pain on this issue which leaves me to ponder upon the pace of development the world has achieved and at the same time forgetting our brothers and sister who are suffering for no fault of theirs”.
Speaking further he contended that in essence, hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot afford to meet their most basic need for food. Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. “Providing the hungry people with bread is the dire need of the hour and modernization and development cannot be said to be truly achieved till we are able to feed the hunger ridden people. It is astonishing to note that at the time when we are dreaming of life on moon and mars we are unable to feed our fellow beings”, he said.
“It is the time to unite against hunger. It is the time to rethink on the strategies to fight the menace which hunger is creating. FAO deserves appreciation from all corners for coming out with such noble idea of 1 Billion hunger petition project to appeal common people to join this movement, which is indeed demand of the time as world cannot afford any delay for tackling this hazard” said Dr. Homoud. He urged people to support this movement for ultimate advantage and survival of the mankind. IIMSAM Middle East Office with participation of other NGO’s of the region are committed to support this project of FAO with all possible support. “ we will ensure that we spread this message of FAO to the maximum of people in Middle East region particularly, we shall ensure that people join hands and unite on this concern to fight for this cause and to express solidarity to the fellow human beings who are victim of this menace”, said Dr. Homoud.
