(Free-Press-Release.com) June 24, 2010 --
Dr. Naseer Homoud, Goodwill Ambassador and Director of Middle East office for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council while advocating unconditional support for UN MDGs said “The Millennium Declaration symbolizes the vital commitments ever committed to the marginalized people and they look world community with high aspirations for changing their lives. We have to ensure the smile and happiness on their face and if we fail, destiny shall never pardon us”. He further advocated for ‘unconditional support’ from all corners including governments and other stakeholders towards achieving MDGs as set by the United Nations.
The Millennium Development Goals Report-2010 issued from the good offices of Secretary General reveals that to achieve the target, more sincere and honest efforts are needed. In this context Dr. Homoud urged “Since MDGs are multifaceted in character and therefore necessitates concerted action by stakeholders from all levels. I take this opportunity to call on the governments and stakeholders for a comprehensive international partnership on the issues of global warming, eradication of poverty and hunger and for strengthening food production and food security policies”.
Ahead of G8 and G20 Summits Dr. Homoud has urged the member countries to deliberate seriously on the issues related to United Nations Millennium Development Goals. He said “Indeed the these Summit are coming at crucial time, on one hand the world community is yet to recover from the effects of global recession and while on the other the efforts for achieving targets of UN MDG’s are yet to be accelerated in its full pace”. The year of 2010 is a crucial year for MDGs as we have only 5 years left till the deadline of 2015 to accomplish the MDGs.
MDGs report showed that progress towards the goals was now endangered by lethargic economic growth, diminished resources, and anticipated reductions in aid flows from donor nations amid global financial crunch. At the same time, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent, with a potentially devastating impact on countries, rich and poor. “We believe that the right policies and actions, backed by strong political commitments on delivery of promises together with support of adequate funding could yield positive results”, added Dr. Homoud.
Dr. Homoud asserted “nevertheless we have achieved some vital progress in our efforts towards MDGs accomplishment but report indicates that we are slow in moving towards the goal and we have to remember that time is very short and with only only 5 years left under our domain, we have to pick up the pace to find out the ways in which we can expect to achieve MDGs under the given deadline. The global financial crisis being faced by world is yet to witness some more repercussions and it could prevent us from achieving our goal thus world has to prepare itself for such situation which might plunge millions more in menace of poverty and hunger thus only aggravating the present situation”.
It is important for the world leaders to rethink on their strategy for supporting the MDGs, urged Dr. Homoud. “We must not allow the current global financial and the food crisis, divert us from the people and governments that the Millennium Development Goals were created for, the poor” said Dr. Homoud.
Governments and stakeholders must come up with strong commitment to promote employment through structural policies, work to address excessive commodity price volatility by improving the functioning and transparency of physical and financial markets and promoting a closer dialogue between producer and consumer countries. “It is not an unattainable task to achieve the MDGs in its given deadline; what we need is the implementation of the commitments and if this being the case, let me assure that we are set to achieve the target”, said Dr. Homoud.
UN Secretary General has urged world leaders to attend the Summit on MDGs to be held in this September at United Nations which aims to boost efforts to achieve Millennium Development Goals. “World expect their leaders to act and that’s too in full swing for achieving MDGs”, said Dr. Homoud. The recent empanelment of MDGs advocacy group consisting of some real life superheroes by UN Secretary General shall act as catalyst in endeavors towards targeting UN MDGs, said Dr. Homoud. “I am optimistic and have high hopes on the advocacy group and wish that they achieve their target, as their objective represents interests of the world community”, he added.
