KFVS Channel 12, on 11/2/11, reports that "Illinois officials stress diabetes awareness in November."
The Illinois Department of Public Health states that “Diabetes is serious chronic disease that poses a major public health problem. More than 827,000 adults in Illinois have been diagnosed with diabetes and each year more than 2,700 residents die from the disease.”
However, for some in District 86, they are receiving little help from our local government agencies and long-term politicians.
On 11/2/11, Ryan M. Alm – 2012 Candidate for Illinois House of Representatives, District 86 (Joliet, Elwood, Channahon), spoke to local resident “Diane L.” on West Manhattan Road in Elwood, who said she is receiving little help from her local government agencies and her local Representative, John C. "Jack" McGuire.
Ms. Diane said “I’ve been living in Elwood for 4 years now and I’ve never received one visit from Rep. McGuire or any representative from his office.” She continued on to state, “Also, I’ve received no mailers from Rep. McGuire and somewhat vaguely even recognize his name! I’m an out of work electrician for 2 years now and can’t find work.”
She lastly stated, “I have type 1 diabetes and I went from an income of roughly $38 per hour as an electrician, now I work part-time for $9 per hour and I can’t afford my medicine. Between rent, gas and utilities, I can barely even afford food let alone diabetes medicine. I went to the public aide office and they said they couldn’t help me because I don’t have a child! They said contact your local legislators and I didn’t know who to talk to. Why am I not eligible for some medical assistance?”
Ms. Diane thanked Candidate Alm for visiting with her at her residence, near the very edge of District 86 which is surrounded by farmland. The Candidate vowed to bring attention to this matter.
“This is a woman who owns no computer,” Candidate Alm said, “she has no local family and she didn’t know who to talk to or who to voice her concerns. Maybe she’d know who to contact if Rep. Jack McGuire bothered to hold a regular town-hall meeting each year or sent some sort of mailer to her home.” Candidate Alm continued “This is a skilled qualified electrician who could greatly contribute to our economy, but sadly, she’s a victim of ‘Jack’s 67% Tax’ and ‘McGuire’s Failed Economic Policies.’”
“Just maybe,” continues Alm, “instead of sending his campaign aides to scour only a portion of the community for petition signatures, he could get out there and actually meet the District 86 citizens himself. Well then again…” Alm said, “he’d have to answer for his massive tax increases, and who wants to do that since he's been dodging the Joliet Herald News about this subject ever since he voted for it in January of 2011. I guess it’s politically safer for him to just stay put in Springfield… for now.”
There are citizens all over District 86 who are hurting from our current economic conditions. Now, more than ever, people need our elected officials to be out in front of the public, working harder than ever. Maybe this is something for the 15+year incumbent to consider. Unfortunately for District 86 citizens, during “diabetes month,” Rep. McGuire falls short in assisting constituents.
