The year of 2010 was an awkward year for tea - the export volume reached 302,400 tonnes with export value to $120 million while Green Barriers from different countries continued. Though China is the biggest countries to produce tea, in the past few years, the Green Barriers on residue of insecticide in tea has been the biggest problem that the exporters have to face.
Among different kinds of insecticides, bifenthrin is the one used by most tea producers in the planting of tea. Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide that affects the nervous system of insects. It is an agricultural insecticide used for the control of borers and termites in timber, insect pests in agricultural crops (bananas, apples, pears, ornamentals) and turf, as well as for general pest control (spiders, ants, fleas, flies, mosquitoes).
Currently, the Standard on Residue of bifenthrin in tea in EU and Japan is comparatively not so restrict. However, it is said that the usage of bifenthrin in tea in national scale is directly resulted by the expansion of the tea industry. In turn, the residue of bifenthrin in tea is set to increase beyond the standard with the widely usage.
