A collection of 150 Civil War letters shared between Greenwich soldier Sergeant Isaac L. Mead, his prominent Connecticut family and close friends are the highlight of this historic sale.
The hand written letters are the intimate account of camp life, battle experience and hardships experienced by a Civil War soldier and his family. Isaac Mead (Rochelle, NY, 1834-1913) was educated in Greenwich, Connecticut. His military career began August 6, 1862, when he enlisted as a private in Company I, 17th Conn. V.I. His first important battle was at Chancellorsville, where he remained with his company until he fell ill with typhoid fever in 1863. Soon after he recovered he entered the Invalid Corps, as a member of the 6th Veteran Reserves, and while with that organization he was assigned to service in McKelvey's Coronet Band, a noted company of musicians. Mr. Mead moved up in the ranks very quickly as discussed in one of his letters from Private to Sergeant. After the war Sergeant Mead assisted in organizing the Lombard Post NO. 24 Grand Army of The Republic and has served as its commander. He followed in his father career as an undertaker and even invented "The Mead Embalming Fluid”.
The collection is highlighted with letters giving in depth accounts of Civil War battles. One such letter details the Battle of Roanoke Island in which William Long gives his detailed account of taking on the Rebel fleet. A rare 10th Connecticut regiment Civil War recruitment poster is expected to fetch $500-$1000. Other key pieces include numerous letters from Sergeant Mead’s wife Esther detailing the struggles and life of the wife of a soldier, family letters, and medals including a Grand Army of the Republic medal.
