Ideas and Resources to Help Improve Reading Fluency

Children’s author, Suzanne Lieurance is pleased to share with you Amy M. O’Quinn’s article entitled, “Reading Fluency: Helping Children Improve and Succeed.”

A sneak peak…

“As a former second-grade classroom teacher-turned-homeschool mom, Amy O’Quinn helped many students either learn to read or improve their reading skills. And she’s learned that children develop or master these skills at different speeds; one cannot make generalizations. Not surprisingly, O’Quinn discovered this to be especially true with her own six children since they began homeschooling in 1997.

Her oldest children, twin daughters, were in first grade when they began their homeschool journey, and they had already been taught beginning reading skills with the A Beka phonics curriculum in the small private school where I taught and they attended K-4 and K-5. They continued the same program in first grade, and they quickly became excellent and voracious readers. Over the next few years, O’Quinn utilized both A Beka and Sing, Spell, Read, and Write with my next two children with the same excellent results.

When her fifth child reached the age for reading instruction, she assumed the pattern would continue and they would have another insatiable reader on their hands within a short time. Over the course of preschool, kindergarten, and first grade, he mastered letter sounds, blends, diagraphs, and diphthongs adequately, and he could ‘sound out’ most words—even though it was often a laborious process. However, he still struggled with fluency, and therefore with comprehension. He was so busy sounding out words that he lost the meaning of what he was trying to read. He dreaded reading time and became frustrated and discouraged. O’Quinn struggled with impatience and comparisons. What was she doing wrong? Why was he not reading as quickly and flawlessly as his older sisters and brother did at the beginning of second grade?

It was now time to take a deep breath and switch gears…”
