In 2012 Marketing More Than Ever Will Make E-Books
As the e-book market continues to explode in 2012, marketing becomes more important than ever for independent e-book authors.

As the e-book market continues to increase, it is also changing and successful authors will change with it. E-books, which can be read on a portable reader, smart phone or personal computer, are selling at an ever-increasing rate. Amazon, the largest bookseller in the world, now sells more fiction titles as e-books than it does as conventional printed editions. In 2010 most of the major e-book sellers reported sales increases of between 600 and 1200 percent over 2009 and most analysts are predicting similar growth for 2011 and 2012.
“The market is definitely there,” says Rick Cook, author, technical journalist and futurist, who has been following the market for e-books for more than a decade. “But it's a changing market and to be successful writers have to adapt.”
Cook's new e-book “Shift Happens: The New Publishing Paradigm And What It Means For Writers” details the structure of the e-book market and offers advice for prospective e-book authors.
One of the biggest changes, Cook says, is the increased need for publicity
As Jeremy Greenfield of Digital Book World said in a recent blog post:”As shelf space at bookstores dwindles and more books are bought online or on devices, just how new books will be discovered (“discoverability”) is becoming the most important issue to publishers.“
Cook points out that discoverability is also a barrier for independent e-book authors. “It used to be the struggle was to get your book published,” Cook points out. “But with e-books that has become fairly simple. Now the fight is to be noticed in an overcrowded market with shrinking conventional distribution channels.”
The solution, Cook says, is savvy marketing by e-book authors. “In e-books you pretty much control your own fate. But that means you've got to make an intelligent effort to market your e-books.”
In fact, Cook says, marketing an e-book in the right way is so important to e-book authors that he devotes an entire section of “Shift Happens” to how to do it right.
“It's a new skill for most e-book authors,” Cook says, “but it's an important one.”
