Independent shopkeepers, badly hit by the current economic climate are now having to diversify in order to survive.
Having to cope with rising costs in rates, fuel and never ending staff increases has resulted in store owners who previously could make a living from sales on their shop floor; now searching for supplementary lines of income.
Some have turned to local markets and car boot sales for extra income.
Many are now also working from home selling their stock via the internet, creating websites and using auction sites such as Amazon and Ebay.
While others are reportedly delving into the world of internet marketing using simple sites such as www.income4learners-ak137.webs.com/ which costs very little and once set up enable them to add an automatic stream of income to their annual turnover whilst not having to leave their shop.
In this fast changing world we are all trying to think laterally - what can we do to stave off a potential financial crisis?
Looking on the positive side, when we are all over the worst and living in more settled times we should have gained more varied skills, knowledge and experience to enable us to earn an easier living!
