There are many independent publishers around the world. How many? No one knows.

One company based in United Kingdom that is now beginning to make its presence felt is Ashgrove House Publishing.

We actually welcome submissions but we cannot accept all. That is how it goes. That, as our friends in the USA might tell us, is how the cookie crumbles.

Take one example. We asked for contributions to our nonfiction Ashgrove 15 Famous….series. The response was good; not overwhelming – which was not desirable anyway – but satisfying enough to be able to note that the message was getting out there. Writers in the USA, Australia, India and South Africa, as well as the UK, showed interest.

There were telephone calls and e-mails. The stumbling block for some was the fact that we were not offering an advance on royalties. These are times of austerity and it is becoming harder to gauge what sales might be like. I am optimistic but in business optimism is not enough. To compensate for the lack of an advance I have agreed to pay royalties somewhat higher than the present industry standard. So far, contracts have been exchanged with John Godwin (Anarchists), F K Francis (Modernist Writers), Edgar Fawthrop (Modern Historians), Merilyn Tomkins (Randlords) and Allan Sutherland (Saxophonists). I admit to the fact that I am looking forward with some excitement to seeing the complete works.
