Industry Leaders Gather to Drive Sustainable Growth in Mining
The two day, 2nd Annual Global Mining Forum concluded on 25th January 2012, with over 50 leading international companies coming together to discuss sustainability

The two day, 2nd Annual Global Mining Forum concluded on 25th January 2012, with over 50 leading international companies coming together to discuss sustainability and its integration into the company strategy and key solutions for better mining practises.
Speakers represented companies & government bodies from European Commission, Department of Natural Resources Canada, British Geological Survey, ENRC, Nordic Mining, Miranda Mineral Holdings, Laiva Gold Mine, Chaarat Gold, Xstrata, Kopparberg Mineral, Sojitz Beralt, Mineware Consulting Pvt Ltd, Hatch Water, Sandvik Mining and Construction Materials Handling GmbH and many more.
Chaired by Patrick Chevalier, Director - Strategic Outreach & Partnerships Division, Department of Natural Resources Government of Canada, day one focussed on some of the most important issues faced within the industry today. The keynote speaker, Paul Anciaux, Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission spoke about the initiatives undertaken by EU within the mining industry. Another key feature was the CEO’s panel wherein 6 CEO’s debated on the most important issue of earning a social license by maintaining good relations between the local community and governments. Some key areas also discussed were Banning the use of cyanide in Europe, Responsible Mining & Canada’s CSR strategy, Building a compliance function & also the rising concern of rare earth & critical metals. The second half of the day highlighted key strategies for sustainable mining operations with leading experts from Xstrata Technology, Hatch, Mineware Consulting & Sandvik Mining.
Day two was chaired by Andrew Johnson, Group Mining Engineer, Global PS Mining Investments Company & Chief Executive Officer, Miranda Minerals, which analysed case studies from Scandinavia, Southwestern Europe, Asia & Africa on significant issues and strategies faced in greenfield and brownfield projects. There was an interactive Panel Discussion on the future of mining in developing countries.
Overall, the conference welcomed delegates from across the globe, who took home key learnings through global case studies and presentations.
