Today, our culture has become so seeped into information technology provided by the web that anybody can become famous in just a blink of an eye. Anybody who has seen Susan Boyle, Tila Tequila, or any other viral superstar shoot into mainstream celebrity fame can attest to that. But in Elizabeth Lambert’s case, the fame she received from the web is something not to be proud of. In what is considered to be one of the recent viral page hits of the season, college soccer player Lambert gained widespread notoriety through an online video which showed her playing dirty on the field.
Dubbed as the “ponytail tackle heard ‘round the world”, a video recently surfaced on Youtube and other viral page sites featuring Elizabeth Lambert pulling down the ponytail of her opponent during the Mountain West semifinal football match between New Mexico University and Bringham Young University on Nov. 5, 2009. Lambert, who was playing for the New Mexico University Lobos, was shown in the video yanking her opponent’s ponytail and forcing her into the ground. The video also shows other un-sportsmanlike conduct by Lambert on the field, such as jabbing her opponent’s back with her elbow and tripping another while running with the ball. And as if to put more salt into the wound, Lambert only got a “yellow card”, a relatively minor penalty in soccer, during the entire match for tripping an opponent for the second time. The video was eventually featured on ESPN’s Sports Center program and was quickly passed around on the Internet
Since appearing on viral page sites a day after the incident, the video of Lambert’s questionable play quickly became a viral sensation. The video featured on Youtube alone has garnered nearly 2,035,055 views and 2,577 text comments, most of which heavily criticizing Lambert’s actions on the field. Several news websites including New York Daily News and CBS News have also featured articles about Lambert and the match. In addition, the clip has also recently been included on Yahoo! Buzz Log, a special website that compiles all the hottest and most popular events on the web.
