As the actual regulations were codified, education in the rules and the ways to conform to the policies became ever more important. Most of the time, instruction in the rules and compliance were handled by firms "in house" or by trade groups. In the late 1970's private training organizations arrived on the scene that were setup for the motive of delivering such instruction.
Twenty five years ago, a program at The University of Findlay (UF) set up curricula directed at meeting the increasing need for regulatory training. The University of Findlay is a private university founded in 1882. Attended by over 4100 students, UF has three hundred and forty course instructors while offering 60 degrees. UF has a track record of success in developing customized degree and academic programs. The school's programs were unique in that they did not concentrate exclusively on teaching comprehension of the regulations and compliance; it provided all-inclusive training on response to industrial and environmental incidents, along with the recovery issues and remediation tasks associated with accidents. This new School of Environmental and Emergency Management , was among the first instruction locations in the USA to provide this kind of 'holistic' approach to OSHA industrial safety, environmental compliance and emergency response management.
Since that time, Findlay has supported the needs of Environmental Health and Safety professionals to extend their capability beyond routine safety inspections and environmental remediation methods to incident prevention and response management. By hiring recognized trainers and establishing among the most state-of-the-art EHS training facilities in North America, UF secured its reputation as a center of excellence for training private and public sector customers from a more complete "all hazards" perspective. This all hazards system teaches not simply technical analysis, but also threat assessment, response management and multi-agency coordination. Acknowledging this all-encompassing approach to environmental, safety and security training, SEEM changed its name to The All Hazards Training Center. Today, 'Findlay All Hazards' offers over sixty adult-education training and certification programs, almost all of which are customized to the customer's particular requirements and taught right at their locations. While Findlay All Hazards offers one of the leading EHS undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the nation, The All Hazards Training Center readies thousands of working individuals with the most recent knowledge, assessment tools and live action exercises necessary to carry out their essential part in safeguarding their community's health, safety and security.
On the other hand, the customer's need is not simply training. Findlay All Hazards also offers facility safety and threat assessments, emergency response plan development and live exercise planning and implementation. Such expanded offerings include things like:
• Writing/Revising Policies
• Plan Evaluations and Audits
• Threat & Safety Assessments
• Develop Emergency Operations Plans
• National Incident Command System
Recently, the Findlay All Hazards Training Center Industrial Safety and Security instructors have developed programs to address an issue of growing importance - the threat of workplace violence. The Workplace Violence Prevention Training provided by Findlay is training courses and services designed to prevent threats and physical violence against employees, as opposed to reacting to it.Findlay delivers custom training to help managers and corporate security professionals recognize the underlying issues that spawn workplace violence and implement proactive actions to prevent incidents of violence.
As with all it's programs, Any UF trainer follows an 'all hazards' methodology to Workplace Violence prevention training, providing such services as:
• Instructing on personality indicators to watch for to identify employees with difficulties that could result inworkplace violence.
• Training how to perform a “safe” employee termination procedure.
• Offering recommendations on security products you might want to consider.
• Making use of a short, customized video to train your staff how to identify future factors of conflict.
• Designing both tabletop and full scale exercises to “test” plans.
The Findlay staff is even pioneering the use interactive, simulation-based Violence Prevention Training. The unique disc-based training simulations help trainees cultivate knowledge necessary to recognize and de-escalate possibly dangerous events. It's a type of 'virtual-reality' training experience in which the student responds to actors in an on-screen conflict scenario. The course of the situation adjusts depending on the student's actions. This interaction aids the student in understanding how to manage a true crisis scenario, without subjecting them to stress or real danger.
