“Valantinus” is a story about vampires with a fresh perspective on their origins, abilities and their purpose. The story brings in Egyptian theme, metaphysical theory, with genuine European history intricately woven into the plot. Typically, the story lines and character profiles in the vampire genre have been very much the same to this point, alluding to but never quite explaining them. Béthune challenges these stereotypes and went to great lengths to find out if her unprecedented approach could withstand history and science. “Valantinus” could be the only vampire novel to ever receive the Forensic Seal of Approval. After creating this “new breed of vampire” Béthune sent her manuscript to scientific professionals, with extensive knowledge in European history and Forensics, to see if they could poke holes in her fiction-based blood suckers.
