As we know Google and the other major search engines such as Yahoo, Bing, Ask, etc are constantly evolving their search engine algorithms, not to defeat or cause problems to companies and businesses who conduct a lot of their marketing online but to give the user (or searcher) a better internet experience through more accurate and focussed search engine results. With these constantly evolving and changing algorithms it follows that those Internet marketing and website development professionals have to keep abreast of all such changes and updates to search engines so as to be in the best position to adapt and advise their clients as to how their Internet marketing would be best strategized and then implemented.

Some years ago now Google introduced a new way of assessing a website by what they called Page Raking. The Google Page Rank went from 0 to 10 and the higher the number the more the Google algorithm perceived a site to be relevant and authoritative to its subject and audience. One very important aspect to the Google Page Rank section of the algorithm was that regarding “back links”. In basis terms the Google algorithm would crawl sites that linked to other websites to assess how the Internet community reacted and respected that website. As with all changes to a practice, an industry grew that offered to help websites gain back links by buying or renting links from already high ranking websites in an attempt to make the Google algorithm perceive that a website was more well respected than it actually was. Most of these industrial linking services were software orientated and only served to have the majority of their clients de-ranked or “Google Slapped” which meant that the website would rank lower on Google than it would normally be and on some occasions be taken out of the index completely.

In an effort to combat this the Google algorithm now has a section to it that not only ascertains where the inbound website links have come from but how fast they have been attained and whether the linking website has content which is relevant to the linked to website.

A link building strategy is a very important part of any “off page” SEO strategy and needs to be balanced with relevant content. There are many adverts on the internet that offer link building services however, the vast majority of these are offering “link farms” or even worse software based spamming. For example and site that is offering a service along the lines of “Let us blast your website with 5,000 one way back links for $45” needs to be avoided at all costs. There are ethical and skilful link building services out there but only use ones that guarantee human only submissions and charge a realistic price for their services. One old piece of advice that is as true today as it always was is “if it seems to good to be true it generally is.”
