Spider veins are narrow valves and look a lot like spider web lines or clusters of tiny tree branches underneath the skin. Spider veins colors are blue, purple and red. They are commonly found on the legs. They can appear on other parts of the body such as your face, around your ankles and on the top of your feet or around your breasts. Both male and female are affected by veins, however over 65 % of women are more affected than men. When spider veins do occur, they cover a small or large patch of the skin.
No one knows the exact cause of spider veins and why they develop. Heredity, pregnancy, menopause, hormones or standing on your legs to long are some factors of why people develop spider veins.
Spider veins are a close relative of varicose veins. Unlike the spider veins, varicose veins are much larger veins because of the blood vessel wall weakening or deteriorating, causing the veins to enlarge and swell. Varicose veins are bluish-purple in color, lumpy appearance and appear to be on top on the skin. With varicose veins your legs are very uncomfortable, achy and restless.
Spider or varicose veins can be treated by Sclerotherapy. It’s a quick and simple procedure. After the procedure your doctor will recommend you to keep your legs elevated for a few hours, allowing the veins to stay open. During and after the procedures you may encounter some pigmentation changes and bruising. The bruising should disappear in 1 to 2 weeks.
You can try to help eliminate spider and varicose veins by keeping your feet lifted up as much as possible, using a pillow or just simple raising your legs up to your waist. Wear support stocking to help provide relief to your legs. If you’re pregnant, watch your weight to keep pressure off legs.
