IPSP Deputy and Diplomatic Counselor Dr. Holger Lüttich: Uranium Weapons must be banned globally

(Free-Press-Release.com) September 30, 2010 -- Last Monday IPSP Deputy and Dipl. Counselor Dr. Holger Lüttich spoke on Uranium weapons, used by NATO and US troops in Kosovo/Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan. As he said the use of Uranium weapons is an awful war crime. These kind of weapons have devastating consequences on human health and the environment. Uranium is not a temporary inconvenience, but stays active for millions of years. Outside the body Uranium travels with water or wind, contaminating regions and even whole countries. The toxic and radioactive dust released by these weapons causes cancers and genetic damage.

Veterans and civilians have children with serious birth defects. The most basic precautionary principle demands the stigmatisation of these weapons even before the extensive circumstantial evidence pointing to their indiscriminate and carcinogenic effect is replaced by irrefutable scientific proof. Lüttich said that these weapons can have no part in a humane and caring world. He called for

1. An immediate end to the use of uranium weapons.
2. Disclosure of all locations where uranium weapons have been used and immediate removal of the remnants and
contaminated materials from the sites under strict control.
3. Health surveys of the 'depleted' uranium victims and environmental investigations at the affected sites.
4. Medical treatment and compensation for the 'depleted' uranium victims.
5. An end to the development, production, stockpiling, testing, trade of uranium weapons.

6. A Convention for a Total Ban on Uranium Weapons.

Lüttich appealed especially to Nobel Prize Recipient US President Obama to prosecute the responsible persons and stop the use of Uranium weapons in war zones immediately. Lüttich also appealed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel to remove German troops from the war in Afghanistan.
